Kampala

The Route

From Entebbe Airport, the main approach follows the Kampala–Entebbe corridor toward the capital, with the expressway providing the quickest option for much of the journey. The surroundings become progressively denser and busier as you enter greater Kampala. Your final route and travel time depend heavily on your neighborhood, time of day and city traffic.

Key Facts

  • 40 km (25 mi) from Entebbe Airport
  • 45–90 minutes
  • Sedan or SUV

The Destination

Uganda’s capital spreads across a landscape of hills, with busy commercial districts, leafy residential neighborhoods, markets, restaurants and nightlife packed into a sprawling city. Kampala is less a conventional sightseeing destination than a place to experience contemporary Uganda: eat well, explore its markets and cultural sites, and watch the city move around you. It is also the country’s natural logistical hub and the starting point for most longer road journeys.

Entebbe + Entebbe Airport

The Route

Entebbe International Airport is Uganda’s main international gateway and sits within Entebbe itself, making transfers to the town’s hotels and lakeside areas quick and straightforward. Most destinations in central Entebbe are only a short drive from the terminal. UgandaCar can arrange airport pickup or drop-off as well as onward transportation from Entebbe to Kampala and destinations across Uganda.

Key Facts

  • 5–8 km (3–5 mi) to central Entebbe
  • 10–20 minutes
  • Sedan or SUV

The Destination

Entebbe is the natural starting and finishing point for most journeys through Uganda. Beyond the airport, the town sits on a green peninsula extending into Lake Victoria, with botanical gardens, lakeside hotels and restaurants nearby. Boat trips into Mabamba Bay offer opportunities to see shoebills, while Entebbe’s quieter atmosphere makes it an easy place to spend a first or final night before continuing through Uganda.

Jinja

The Route

Travel east from Kampala toward Jinja and the Nile. The main route runs through Mukono and Lugazi, but when traffic is heavy there is a useful northern alternative through Gayaza and Kayunga that loops back south toward Njeru and Jinja. Although longer, the northern route can avoid much of the congestion on the main Kampala–Jinja road, so your driver can choose the better route based on traffic and your pickup location.

Key Facts

  • 80 km (50 mi) from Kampala
  • 1.5–2.5 hours
  • Sedan or SUV

The Destination

Jinja sits beside the Nile near its departure from Lake Victoria and has developed into Uganda’s center for river life and outdoor adventure. White-water rafting is the headline attraction, but boat trips, kayaking, riverside restaurants and relaxed lodges make it worth staying even if you never touch a paddle. Compared with Kampala, the pace is slower and the river gives Jinja the feel of an easy escape from the capital.

UgandaCar can arrange a single intercity transfer or connect several stops into a longer journey.

Murchison Falls

The Route

Travel north from Kampala toward Masindi before continuing into the Murchison Falls conservation area. The southern entrance is about 305 kilometers from Kampala and takes roughly 4 to 5 hours to reach, while many lodges require another 1 to 2 hours from the entrance. Your actual journey therefore depends on your park gate and lodge. A stop at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary can also be incorporated into the drive north.

Key Facts

  • 305 km (190 mi)
  • 5–6 hours
  • 4×4

The Destination

Murchison Falls combines one of Uganda’s most dramatic landscapes with classic East African wildlife. Here the Nile is forced through a narrow gorge before crashing into the river below, while the surrounding savannah supports elephants, giraffes, buffalo, lions and abundant antelope. Game drives are complemented by boat trips along the Nile toward the falls, making this one of Uganda’s best destinations for combining wildlife, scenery and time on the water.

Queen Elizabeth

The Route

Travel west from Kampala into Uganda’s Rift Valley toward Queen Elizabeth National Park. Your precise route depends on whether you are traveling directly from Kampala or combining the park with Fort Portal and Kibale. The main park area is about 410 kilometers from Kampala and requires at least 7 to 8 hours by road. Travelers continuing to the southern Ishasha sector should allow additional time.

Key Facts

  • 410 km (255 mi)
  • 7–8 hours
  • 4×4

The Destination

Queen Elizabeth National Park stretches across a remarkably varied Rift Valley landscape of savannah, lakes, wetlands and volcanic features beneath the Rwenzori Mountains. Game drives bring opportunities to see elephants, buffalo, lions and other wildlife, while boat trips on the Kazinga Channel offer close views of hippos and waterbirds. The southern Ishasha sector is particularly famous for its tree-climbing lions.

Mountain Gorillas · Misty Forest · Mountain Trails

Bwindi

The Route

Bwindi does not have a single road destination, so your route depends on the trekking sector listed on your gorilla permit. The main Buhoma trailhead is roughly 460 kilometers from Kampala, while Ruhija, Rushaga and Nkuringo are reached by different approaches through southwestern Uganda. The final sections include slower mountain roads, making this a genuine full-day journey.

Key Facts

  • 460–520 km (286–323 mi)
  • 8–10 hours
  • 4×4

The Destination

Bwindi feels less like arriving at a conventional national park than reaching the edge of an ancient mountain forest. The main attraction is trekking through the forest to encounter mountain gorillas, but the misty hills, dense vegetation and remote villages give the region an atmosphere that extends well beyond the trek itself. Your lodge and gorilla permit determine which of Bwindi’s four trekking sectors, Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga or Nkuringo, your road journey needs to reach.

Kibale

The Route

Travel west from Kampala through Fort Portal before continuing south to Kanyanchu, the main tourism hub in Kibale National Park. The landscape becomes increasingly lush approaching western Uganda, with rolling hills, tea country and crater lakes around the wider Fort Portal region.

Key Facts

  • 335 km (208 mi)
  • 5–6 hours
  • SUV or 4×4

The Destination

Kibale is dense, green and intimate, offering a completely different experience from Uganda’s open savannah parks. The forest is best known for its chimpanzees and is one of Africa’s major primate destinations, while the surrounding landscape of tea plantations, villages and crater lakes is part of its appeal. Nearby Fort Portal makes a useful base, and the region fits naturally into a longer journey through western Uganda.

The Lakes

The Route

Travel southwest from Kampala through Masaka and Mbarara into the highlands around Kabale and Kisoro. Lake Bunyonyi lies just beyond Kabale, while Lake Mutanda sits farther west near Kisoro and the mountain-gorilla regions. The final roads become hillier and slower as you enter Kigezi, and the lakes combine naturally with Bwindi or Mgahinga as part of a longer southwestern journey. Kampala to Lake Bunyonyi is approximately 446 kilometers by road.

Key Facts

  • 446 km (277 mi) to Lake Bunyonyi
  • 7–8 hours
  • SUV or 4×4

The Destination

Lake Bunyonyi and Lake Mutanda offer a quieter side of southwestern Uganda between steep green hills, islands and cultivated highlands. Bunyonyi is the larger and more developed lake, with lodges and boat trips among its islands, while Mutanda is smaller and more remote, with dramatic views toward the Virunga volcanoes. Both work particularly well as places to slow down before or after a gorilla trek.

  • 4–5 hours
  • SUV or 4×4

The Destination

Sipi Falls is a series of waterfalls set among the green foothills of Mount Elgon. Cross-Border Travel

The Route

UgandaCar can arrange cross-border road travel from Uganda into Rwanda and Kenya. Head southwest through Mbarara and Kabale for Kigali, or east through Jinja toward Kenya, crossing at Busia for Kisumu and western Kenya or Malaba for Eldoret, Nakuru and Nairobi. Border processing adds time to the journey, and cross-border trips require the appropriate passenger documents and a vehicle authorized for international travel.

Key Facts

  • Rwanda: Kigali via Katuna/Gatuna
  • Kenya: Kisumu via Busia
  • Kenya: Eldoret/Nakuru/Nairobi via Malaba
  • SUV or 4×4

The Destination

Uganda’s road network connects naturally with both Rwanda and Kenya, making it possible to continue an East African journey without returning to the airport. Kigali is a natural extension from southwestern Uganda, while Kenya can be reached through two eastern corridors toward Kisumu, Eldoret and Nairobi. UgandaCar can arrange point-to-point cross-border transportation or incorporate an international leg into a longer private journey, subject to vehicle availability and current border requirements.
